Advanced Microgrid Solutions (AMS) is a leading edge energy services platform pioneering the use of behind-the-meter energy storage and renewable energy systems for electric utility grid operation and customer energy services. The Development Applications Engineer will be responsible for providing professional, electrical engineering services to Advanced Microgrid Solutions toward the development and implementation of hybrid electric facilities using energy storage systems (ESS) and solar PV. This individual will work in the Project Development group with the Project Management team.
The Development Applications Engineer must have experience working electrical distribution and power generation design in a distributed generation environment. An understanding of grid independent infrastructure for distributed generation, such as battery storage and solar PV, and corresponding code requirements associated with distributed energy resources, is a requirement.
The position will serve as a liaison from the Project Development to the Analytics and Software groups. Responsibilities include providing technical input into new product feasibility, application, and deployment; supporting the project managers in addressing site specific engineering requirements; and coordinating electrical and physical site design and battery/inverter functionality with operational software platform, including data and communication paths.
Job responsibilities include supporting technical designs that will require interfacing with customers, utilities, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ’s) and constructor contractors. Knowledge of the Generating Facility Interconnection Agreement and Pre Parallel Inspection process for multiple utilities is a plus.
Support the development of innovative offerings in various applications of energy storage and renewables.
Become subject matter expert in AMS standard offering design and drawing reviews for new development projects.
Develop and test new technical solutions to improve operations and functionality of deployed systems.
Act as the liaison between the operational software platform and site design.
Interface with battery vendors to ensure ESS functionality, including operational testing and commissioning.
Provide input to Business Development efforts by responding to customer-specific engineering requests.
Support project management in strategic pilots and projects.
Ensure site design conforms to specifications required for the implementation of Advanced Microgrid Solutions’ ESS.
Perform drawing reviews of different drawing iterations (CD30/CD70/CD100) to ensure EPCs comply with AMS & Battery manufacturer standards as well as value engineering.
Interface with external engineering design firms to verify all site equipment (electrical switchgear, metering, and interconnection design) is correct and valued engineered.
Interface with utility companies on interconnection approval of ESS facilities and support field-based Pre Parallel Inspections (PPIs).
Drive process development for key, technical processes.
Create datasheets and tracking tools for AMS products such as our remote intelligence gateway.
Establish and maintain systems and checklists for processes such as the ESS and solar PV project design review and utility interconnection.
Identify opportunities for new methods to overcome engineering obstacles.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
BS in Electrical Engineering (with an emphasis in power systems preferred).
2+ years of relevant experience in power in areas such as power electronics, commercial electrical applications, and/or ESS and renewable generation.
Knowledge of codes such as the NEC, Rule 21, and other interconnection standards.
Able to defend technical recommendations utilizing sound industry standards.
Experience with communication infrastructure such as SCADA or wireless networks is a plus.
Strong written and verbal communication skillset with ability to interact with all levels of an organization effectively, from facilities personnel to executive leadership.
Strong organizational skills.
Able to work independently with a strong sense of initiative.
Comfortable working in a start up environment.
Field experience commissioning distributed generation equipment
Knowledge of low and medium voltage power systems and electronic principals
Basic understanding of Battery Storage operation
Experience with SCADA, Modbus, DNP3
Experience with utility metering and utility tariffs like Net Energy Metering
